Overview

Raleigh is the anchor of the Triangle and one of the fastest-growing cities in the US. But beyond the growth headlines, it is a city of actual neighborhoods — each with its own character, price point, and lifestyle.

Inside the Beltline (ITB), you will find tree-lined streets in Five Points, walkable restaurants near Person Street, and historic charm in Oakwood and Boylan Heights. Outside the Beltline, neighborhoods like Brier Creek and Falls of Neuse offer newer construction and more space.

Looking for the North Hills / Midtown area specifically? We have a dedicated guide for that.

The Honest Take

What People Love

  • Neighborhoods with character — Five Points, Oakwood, Cameron Village, and Boylan Heights each feel distinct
  • Food scene — Transfer Co Food Hall, Morgan Street Food Hall, and dozens of restaurants along Glenwood South and Person Street
  • Culture — NC Museum of Art (free), NCMA Park trails, Dorothea Dix Park, CAM Raleigh
  • Downtown energy — Fayetteville Street, Red Hat Amphitheater, and a growing live music scene

What Surprises People

  • Sprawl — Raleigh is spread out. Some neighborhoods are 25+ minutes from each other with no traffic
  • ITB premium — Inside the Beltline prices can rival North Hills. Budget $500k+ for a decent single-family home
  • Uneven walkability — Downtown and a few neighborhoods are walkable, but most of Raleigh still requires a car
  • Summer heat — July and August are genuinely hot and humid

Housing

Raleigh has the widest housing variety in the Triangle:

  • Historic homes in Oakwood, Boylan Heights, and Five Points (1900s–1950s)
  • Ranch-style homes near Cameron Village and Hillsborough Street
  • New construction townhomes and condos downtown and in Midtown
  • Suburban single-family in Brier Creek, Falls of Neuse, and North Raleigh

Lifestyle

Dining: Transfer Co Food Hall, Bida Manda, Poole's Diner, Beasley's Chicken + Honey, Crawford & Son Coffee: Jubala, Morning Times, Sir Walter Coffee, Black & White Coffee Parks: Dorothea Dix Park, Pullen Park, Lake Johnson, William B.
